President Droupadi Murmu gave the Kirti Chakra to Captain Anshuman Singh’s wife, Smt Smriti Singh, and his mother.
President Presents Smriti Singh
President Droupadi Murmu presented Smriti Singh, dressed in a white sari, with the renowned Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry medal, on Saturday in a heartbreaking show of bravery and endurance. She was married to the late Captain Anshuman Singh, who unfortunately perished in July 2023 at Siachen while valiantly defending his allies from flames.
A video that was released on social media by DD National and the Indian Ministry of Defence captured the touching moment when Smriti Singh and Captain Singh’s mother accepted the accolade from the President. Smriti can be seen in the video respectfully folding her hands in gratitude for her husband’s ultimate sacrifice.
The unfortunate tragedy happened in July 2023 early in the morning at an Indian Army ammunition storage in Siachen when a short circuit caused a fire.
Captain Singh Courageousness
Captain Singh courageously helped rescuers who were trapped inside a flimsy shack amid the pandemonium. Despite the growing danger as the fire extended to a nearby hospital, Captain Singh bravely risked his life to get essential medication, but in the process, he suffered severe injuries and sadly lost his life.
Smriti began the video by discussing her relationship with Singh and how they first met at an engineering college. She said of her first meeting with Anshuman that it was “love at first sight.” She spoke about her eight-year-long long-distance relationship with Captain Singh, which ended in February of last year when they were married. “Unfortunately, within two months of marriage, he got posted to Siachen,” Smriti remarked, discussing the Siachen fire and her most recent conversation with Captain Singh. We had a lengthy discussion on July 18 about how our lives might unfold over the following 50 years—we would probably build a house and have children. I received word by phone early on the 19th that he had passed away. We struggled for the first seven or eight hours to believe that anything similar could have occurred.”
