Surjit Patar, a 79-year-old poet, writer, and recipient of the Padma Shri, passed away on May 11. According to his family, Patar passed away while he was asleep at his home close to the Barewal Colony in Ludhiana, as reported by PTI. His two boys and his wife survive him.

Patar did not answer when Bhupinder Kaur, his wife, tried to rouse him up on May 11, Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. After that, she contacted a doctor, who pronounced him dead. A close family friend, Gurbhajan Gill, said the cremation will probably take place on Monday once his son returns from Australia.

The poems “Hawa Vich Likhe Harf,” “Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varanmala,” “Patjhar Di Pazeb,” “Lafzaan Di Dargah,” and “Surzameen” are among those written by Patar. Along with this he has translated into Punjabi the three tragedies of Federico Garcia Lorca, the play Nagmandala by Girish Karnad, and poems by Pablo Neruda and Bertolt Brecht.
In 2012, Patar was awarded the Padma Shri in the fields of education and writing. In addition to serving as president of the Punjab Sahit Akademi, he currently presides over the Punjab Arts Council. The Sahitya Akademi Award, Panchnad Puruskar, Saraswati Samman, and Kusumagraj Literary Award have all been given to the poet and writer.

He retired from his position as a Punjabi professor at Ludhiana’s Punjab Agricultural University. Patar completed his studies at Randhir College in Kapurthala and the Guru Nanak Dev University’s Ph.D. program on “Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani.”
Following his passing, a number of political figures, musicians, and actors—among them Punjab’s chief minister, Bhagwant Mann—expressed their sorrow and sympathy.

Chief Minister Mann posted on X, the former Twitter, expressing his profound sadness at Patar’s loss. “End of an era, as famous Punjabi writer and poet Padma Shri Surjit Patar Sahib has passed away today,” remarked former chief minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh on X. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and his countless fans across the globe. Today, Punjab lost a legend.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, the leader of Shiromani Akali Dal, stated that Patar’s passing has created a gap in the literary world.
