As part of a cabinet change in Chief Minister MK Stalin’s team, three MLAs from Tamil Nadu took the oath of office as ministers in the DMK administration. Senthil Balaji, the leader of the DMK, was sworn in as a minister after serving 15 months in prison for alleged money laundering before being granted bail by the Supreme Court.
The other three MLAs, Govi Chezhian, SM Nasar, and R Rajendran, took the oath of office as ministers. As the minister of electricity, excise, and prohibition, Mr. Balaji has returned. Mr. Rajendran has been assigned the tourism ministry, Mr. Nassar will become the new minister for minorities, and Mr. Chezhian will get responsible for higher education.
The Generational Leadership
The appointment of MK Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, to the position of Deputy Chief Minister makes this cabinet reorganization even more noteworthy. After his father, MK Stalin, and late grandfather, M Karunanidhi, a DMK veteran, he is the third generation leader in his family to hold a significant position in the Tamil Nadu administration. The 46-year-old leader was a minister prior to being promoted to the state government’s second-highest position, thus, he did not take an oath of office during the occasion. Following the oath-taking ceremony at Raj Bhavan, he was observed applauding the four ministers.
Udayanidhi Stalin Faces Backlash From BJP And AIADMK
In a social media post earlier today, Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that he considers his role as “Deputy Chief Minister” to be a responsibility rather than a title. He also paid respects at the graves of social activist Periyar and his grandfather, M Karunanidhi.
The BJP and AIADMK have sharply criticized Udhayanidhi Stalin’s appointment to the top position.
Speaking on behalf of the AIADMK, Kovai Sathyan called young Stalin a “prince” and stated that his promotion signifies the DMK’s demise before the 2026 state elections. This shows how much of a lie MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, is. Before the 2021 election, he declared that neither he nor his son-in-law would enter politics. What we have been saying is indicated by this. This is democracy passed into dynasty rule. DMK refers to a single family. In Tamil Nadu, today is a dark day.”
Targeting the DMK as well, the BJP claimed that the party’s past was characterized by “years of betrayal of the people and prioritizing family interests over public welfare.” “Despite being part of the alliance, DMK has denied its partners a share in power and instead appointed Udhayanidhi Stalin as Deputy Chief Minister.”
