Porter violated league regulations by participating in widespread gambling, according to the NBA’s investigation.
Before a game on March 20, he allegedly “disclosed confidential information” regarding his own health situation to an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor. Jontay Porter barely played three minutes in the game, claiming to have been ill during, according to the league.

Before the March 20 game, a $80,000 online bet that he would underperform was made; if correct, it would have paid out $1.1 million; however, due to the wager’s unusually high stake, it was “frozen” and “not paid out,” according to the NBA.
Using “an associate’s online betting account,” Jontay Porter wagered on at least 13 NBA games while he was a Raptors G League member in March, according to the league.
The league stated that none of those wagers were on Raptors games. The NBA reports that the wagers had a total value of $54,094, ranging from $15 to $22,000. His winnings from those March bets came to $21,965.
“While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place,” Silver stated.
Professional and elite collegiate sports previously forbade gambling, with the only state where bets were legally accepted being Nevada.
However, since the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated a federal statute that had forced states to outlaw these bets in 2018, sports betting has become extremely popular.
