indigioA portion of the roof at Delhi International Airport’s Terminal 1 fell Friday morning amid torrential rains, leaving one person dead and six others injured. Approximately 200 aircraft per day were diverted to the airport’s two other terminals when the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) closed the terminal for aviation operations.
The MoCA has ordered thorough structural inspections at all of the nation’s airports and is currently looking into the event.
The Roof At Delhi International Airport’s Terminal 1 Fell
Aviation industry experts state that over 200 flights are handled daily at Terminal 1 (T1), all of which are run by IndiGo and SpiceJet. “IndiGo accounted for roughly 80 percent of T1 flights, with SpiceJet operating the rest,” an airline official stated. The busiest airport in India, Delhi, has three terminals and serves 1,270 aircraft a day on average.
After examining the fallen building, Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu declared that the injured would receive Rs 3 lakh each, and the deceased would receive Rs 20 lakh.
“In 2009, this building was constructed. Delhi International Airport Limited, or DIAL, has been ordered to do a check on their end. We’re not just letting them go. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is part of the ministry, is in charge of overseeing safety. This inspection will also be overseen by them. They’re going to give us a report too,” he declared.
All flights to and from Terminal 1 at the Delhi airport, run by the GMR Group-led DIAL, were canceled until 2:00 PM. According to the ministry, flights that were supposed to leave after 2:00 PM were moved to Terminals 2 and 3. At the other two terminals, this resulted in multiple cancellations and delays. At the Delhi airport on Friday, over 350 flights were canceled, and about 350 were delayed, according to flightaware.com.
Naidu’s Statement On The Roof Fall
“I assure you that we have taken this incident very seriously,” Naidu stated. We are not limited to this airport only. We will have to go through every airport in the nation with a similar structure once more. We’re going to inspect every airport thoroughly. It is monsoon season right now. We’ll make the appropriate choice in accordance with the safety regulations.”
On March 10 of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened 15 airport projects, including the renovated and extended T1 of the Delhi airport.
“The Prime Minister opened a building that is on the other side (of T1),” stated Naidu. The roof that fell was constructed in 2009. We’ll do the required examination right now. Any improper attitude will not be accepted by this regime.
“Everyone has left the T1 area. Nobody is within. We have until tomorrow to inspect the terminal. “We’ll keep operating the flights from T2 and T3,” he said.
All SpiceJet flights, including arrivals and departures, have been moved from T1 to T3, according to a DIAL representative. T2 and T3 are now home to every IndiGo flight from T1.
“A section of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt at Delhi Airport’s T1 fell about 5 am due to heavy rain that has been falling since early this morning. There have been reports of injuries, and emergency workers are attempting to offer those impacted the required support, including medical attention.”
