President Lazarus Chakwera has declared that nine other passengers, including Vice President Saulos Chilima of Malawi, perished in the jet accident. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered in a woodland shrouded in fog.
Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima Did Not Survive The Crash
One day after going missing due to inclement weather, the military plane’s remnants were discovered on Tuesday in a mountainous region in the country’s north. The search and rescue team has located the airplane. utterly destroyed with no survivors because every passenger died instantly upon impact, according to President Lazarus Chakwera, who made the announcement on national television.
He described the collision as a “terrible tragedy” and stated, “Words cannot describe how heartbreaking this is.”
Three members of the military personnel and seven passengers were on board, including the former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri, who was married to the late President Bakili Muluzi. The group was traveling to Mzuzu, a town in the north, to attend a former justice minister’s funeral.
Monday morning, the jet took off from the capital, Lilongwe, at around 9 a.m. (GMT 07:00), but it did not arrive at Mzuzu International Airport, which is located about 370 kilometers (230 miles) north, as planned, and took around 45 minutes to land.
The Plane Lost Control
Malcolm Webb of Al Jazeera reported from outside Chilima’s home in Lilongwe, saying, “As the plane approached Mzuzu, the control tower there – the government says – told the aircraft it couldn’t land because of the bad weather and that it should turn around and return to Lilongwe.”
He continued, “After that, the plane vanished from radars, and communication was lost, which prompted the start of the search,” adding that the location where the aircraft went missing was isolated and had low visibility, which presented significant difficulties for rescuers.
According to Webb, the deceased’s remains were transported to Lilongwe on a military aircraft on Tuesday night. The details of the funeral would be revealed later.
“Deeply surprised”
According to the AFP news agency, images released by a military rescue team member showed soldiers standing next to the wreckage with the registration number of a Dornier 228-202K aircraft that the Malawi Army Air Wing was flying on a misty incline.

Chakwera stated that he had made such flights in the past on the same aircraft. He also mentioned that the team had successfully operated it just hours before the catastrophe.

“I’m grieving and stunned beyond belief. I considered Saulos to be like a son,” former president Joyce Banda said to AFP.
“This nation has lost a brilliant man; we have lost a champion who was an authority on business and industry and who held the view that the private sector is what drives economic expansion.
“Unfortunately, since he was like my son, I also have to be personal.”
Chakwera had run for president in the 2019 election on behalf of the Malawi Congress Party, whereas Chilima had represented the opposition United Transformation Movement.
