At the age of 83, Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, who gained popularity for his glitzy creations, vibrant prints, and a large following of celebrities, passed away in Florence. His opulent style was unabashedly sexual, with extravagant designs influenced by the worlds of exotic flora and fauna, high hemlines, and even lower waistlines. Cavalli’s primary property was a 13-hectare (32-acre) Tuscan villa with a tanning machine, racehorses, Ferraris, parrots, iguanas, a Persian cat, a monkey, and a tiger. His lifestyle was equally opulent.
Roberto Cavalli: The Label
In 1970, Cavalli debuted his own label under the same name and gained notoriety by patenting a novel method of printing on leather. He initially displayed his ground-breaking method in his Paris debut collection, which included an evening gown made of pink leather. Immediately after, Cavalli received assignments from Pierre Cardin and Hermès, two French fashion brands.
Later on, he focused on denim. The first pair of sand-blasted jeans were displayed in his autumn/winter ’94 collection, and the following year he created stretch jeans by combining Lycra with the fabric. Because of the quick success of the form-fitting jeans, he started a specialized line called Cavalli Jeans, which was eventually renamed Just Cavalli.
Celebs Share Appreciation And Love
The Sicilian designer Fausto Puglisi was named creative director in October 2020. Puglisi said, “Dear Roberto, you may not be physically here with us anymore, but I know I will feel your spirit with me always,” in a statement released by the brand to announce Cavalli’s passing.
“Working under your legacy and contributing to the brand you founded with such vision and style is the greatest honor of my career.” Rest in peace. You are so loved that people will always remember you, and you will be missed. You are an inspiration to me and many others. Giorgio Armani honored his fellow Italian designer, referring to him as a “true artist.”
“I cannot imagine a vision of fashion more distant from mine than that of Roberto Cavalli, yet I have always had enormous respect for him: Roberto was a true artist, wild and wonderful in his use of prints, capable of transforming fantasy into seductive clothes,” the man wrote in a post shared by the Armani account on X.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing; his Tuscan zest will be sadly missed.” Victoria Beckham paid tribute to Cavalli on her Instagram stories by sharing a picture of the two of them holding hands while he lifted his hand and gave the peace sign. “I’m saddened to learn about Roberto’s untimely death. He will always be a legend.
Adriana Lima, a Brazilian model, shared a photo of herself with Cavalli on X, captioning it, “Unapologetic in spirit & style.” Today, we lost a legend. Peace be with you.
Roberto Cavalli: Personal Life
In a tiny Tuscan town in 1940, Cavalli was born. Giuseppe Rossi, his grandpa, was a well-known artist and part of the Macchiaioli movement. Later, after his father was killed by German soldiers, Cavalli relocated to Florence with his mother, a seamstress, and his siblings. In 1957, while he was a student at the Florence Academy of Art, he started experimenting with fabrics.
He had two children with Silvanella Giannoni, his first wife, whom he married in 1964. He married Eva Duringer, a former Miss Universe competitor he met while judging the pageant in 1977, in 1980 after they divorced in 1974. Eva joined him in business, and the two had three children together.
Up until they decided to sell the company, the couple collaborated. 2010 saw their divorce. He made the announcement in 2023 that he and his partner, the Swedish model and actor Sandra Nilsson, had welcomed their sixth child, a son.
