Following a fight with cancer, O.J. Simpson, a Pro Football Hall of Famer best known for being found not guilty of double murder in 1995 and found guilty of armed robbery in 2008, passed away on Wednesday, his family confirmed on social media. His age was seventy-six. After winning the Heisman Trophy at USC in 1968, Simpson became a famous running back with the Buffalo Bills. It is stated that Simpson was given a prostate cancer diagnosis in February and has been receiving treatment.
“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” the family said in a letter. “His kids and grandkids were all around him. In this period of change, his family kindly requests that you honor their requests for discretion and dignity.“
O.J. Simpson Aka Juice
Simpson, often known as “Juice,” was the first overall pick in the 1969 NFL Draft and finished just outside of the top 20 in career yards gained (11,236). He is most known for winning NFL MVP in 1973, despite surpassing 2,000 yards in a single season.
Simpson is most renowned for being tried and found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, despite his exploits in the NFL. On June 12, 1994, the two were fatally murdered outside of Brown’s Los Angeles residence. On October 3, 1995, following an 11-month trial, Simpson was declared not guilty of two counts of first-degree murder.
Simpson’s Conviction Of An Armed Robbery
In a 1997 civil action brought by the families of Brown and Goldman, Simpson was eventually found guilty of wrongful death and violence and forced to pay close to $33.5 million in damages.
After being convicted of an armed robbery in 2007, Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison—exactly 13 years to the day he was cleared of the murders. He acknowledged that, while in a hotel room in Las Vegas, he had stolen some of his old sports memorabilia back from a vendor at gunpoint.
O.J. Simpson: Football Career
On the field, O.J. Simpson appeared in five straight Pro Bowls from 1972 to 1976. During that time, he was named an All-Pro and amassed more than 1,100 running yards annually. With a total of 75 career touchdowns, he led the league in rushing yards over four different seasons and in rushing touchdowns in 1973 and 1975. After playing for the San Francisco 49ers for six years, Simpson was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
Simpson won the Heisman Trophy for the Trojans prior to his NFL career, and USC eventually retired his No. 32 jersey. Aside from football, he acted in over 30 movies and television series, including the comedy series “The Naked Gun.” In addition, he was well-known for his TV ads, where he frequently appeared as a salesman for Hertz automobile rentals.
