According to Variety, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in talks to reprise their roles as the witchy sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, respectively, in the upcoming film “Practical Magic 2.” Warner Bros. captioned a clip from the 1998 romance-fantasy classic on TikTok to share the news: “It’s confirmed… “Practical Magic 2 is on the way!”
According to Varity, Bullock and Kidman will produce alongside Denise Di Novi, who was responsible for the first picture and is well-known for her work on female-focused movies like “Heathers” and “Little Women.” The screenplay of Practical Magic 2 will be written by Oscar-winning “A Beautiful Mind” writer Akiva Goldsman, who also authored the script for the original movie.
Practical Magic: Revisiting The Plot
Following the tragic deaths of their parents, Sally and Gillian, two sisters descended from a centuries-old line of witches, were raised and schooled in practical magic by their aunts. This is the story that was told in the original film. The sisters unintentionally poisoned Gillian’s violent boyfriend, and now they have to battle his evil spirit and the curse that says any man who loves an Owens woman will die. This happens when they reanimate his corpse.
The Times wrote in its 1998 review of the first film, “Where ‘Bewitched’ had just one romantic sorceress trying to contain her power while indulging ordinary human passions, this one has two — the ever-wholesome Sandra Bullock, an Elizabeth Montgomery surrogate if there could be one, and the ever-seductive Nicole Kidman.”
The review went on, “[Stockard] Channing and [Dianne] Wiest play eccentric aunts with apt hamminess, and Bullock and Kidman provide spunky star turns.” It simply doesn’t add up to or decompose into anything noteworthy. It scarcely has any memorable scenes, good or bad.
Something Big Coming Our Way
Nevertheless, fans, some of whom were duped by a 2019 statement that HBO was producing a prequel series depicting the sisters’ aunts, Franny and Jet, as teenage witches, will be happy to hear about the sequel. Even while Di Novi was hinting at yet another trip to small-town Massachusetts, the project was shelved this February.
In February, she told UPI, “I think the fans are going to be thrilled.” Further, she said that something from “the world of ‘Practical Magic'” was “in the works.”
A release date has not yet been disclosed, and most of the project is still being kept under wraps. “Practical Magic” is available for streaming on Max in the interim.
