Police batons and tear gas have queried the large-scale protest in Thane, Maharashtra, over the sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls at a school. After being overrun by demonstrators for more than six hours, the Badlapur railway station quickly cleared out and a sizable police presence took action. Flashing batons caused people, many of them seated on the railroad tracks, to start running. Stones were thrown back by demonstrators on the opposite side of the station, turning the area into a battleground. However, the police won and pursued the demonstrators as they fled in confusion.
The Badlapur Outrage Leads To Train Traffic
As more information about the sexual assault became available, the fury grew. Thousands of demonstrators had gathered at the nearby Badlapur rail station early in the morning to obstruct train traffic. After six hours, the crowds got larger, raising questions about law and order and train movement. The crowd’s cries of “hang, hang” in response to the government’s attempts to diffuse the situation indicate that they want the 23-year-old cleaner, who is supposedly at fault to be executed.
Opposition Leader Comments On The Recent Horrific Cases
The opposition’s allegation that the girls’ parents were forced to wait 11 hours at a nearby police station for a First Information Report has infuriated the demonstrators even more. The administration has placed the three involved police officers on suspension.
In the context of the recent controversy surrounding the rape and death of a young physician in Kolkata, the Thane protest seemed to have attracted attention from the local community. Given that the girls in Badlapur are just four years old, Vijay Wadettiwar, the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra assembly, claimed that the crime there is “bigger” than the rape murder in Kolkata.
“Two-year-old and four-year-old girls are the victims of atrocities, and when the parents try to register a complaint at the police station, they are forced to wait eleven hours… Does it still have any sensitivity? The Press Trust of India reported Mr. Wadettiwar as saying, “I spoke to the police commissioner and told him that the woman police officer responsible for this delay must be suspended immediately.”
The Badlapur School Girl Rape Case
On August 16, two girls were sexually attacked in the girls’ restroom of an English-medium school. The defendant has been taken into custody. The principal has been suspended by the school administration, and the nanny and class teacher have been fired.
An investigation of the school’s operations found multiple shortcomings. For example, the girls’ restrooms lacked a female attendant, which is a basic safety requirement. A large number of the CCTV cameras at the school were also inoperable.
A female IPS officer would serve as the team leader for the Special Investigation Team, which Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed to be formed. Additionally, the police have been requested to present a proposal for the case to be tried in a fast-track court.
