Mukhtar Ansari, a convicted criminal who later became a politician, passed away on Thursday in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, after complaining of stomach trouble earlier in the day.
Mukhtar Ansari Cause Of Death Revealed
According to sources who spoke to India Today TV, the 60-year-old politician’s health worsened after he broke his “roza,” or the fast that Muslims follow during the holy month of Ramadan. A medical team hurried to Ansari’s detention facility, Banda Jail in Uttar Pradesh. The lawmaker was sent to Banda Medical Hospital when his condition worsened, and while receiving treatment there, he passed away.
Ansari’s attorney, Naseem Haider, claimed he was told by the jail administration that his client, the former mobster who is now a politician, was transported to the Banda Medical College, but he was not given any more details.
Who Was Ansari?
Mukhtar Ansari was born on June 30, 1963, in Yusufpur, Uttar Pradesh. His journey from the streets of crime to the halls of authority was both enthralling and contentious.
When Mukhtar Ansari first entered the criminal world in the 1980s, he initially sided with the Makhanu Singh gang. During the 1990s, his role in organized crime increased, especially in the districts of Mau, Ghazipur, Varanasi, and Jaunpur. He rose to prominence in the criminal underground, waging bitter battles, chiefly against Brijesh Singh, for control of large contracts in coal mining, railroad building, and other industries.
Violent clashes characterized this time, such as the 2002 ambush on his convoy that claimed the lives of three of his men and incited additional violence in the area.
Mukhtar Ansari: The Political Journey
Despite his reputation, Ansari entered politics and used his connections to win five seats as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Mau constituency starting in 1996. Ansari’s dual nature was evident throughout his political career. Some saw him as a modern-day Robin Hood, while others saw him only as a result of his illegal actions.
During his political career, he was associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and then formed the Quami Ekta Dal (QED) with his brothers after being kicked out of the BSP, where he was presented as the poor people’s Messiah.
Ansari’s Imprisonment And Family Background
Mukhtar Ansari’s life was tainted by legal issues; since being imprisoned in 2005, he has been charged in over 60 cases. His criminal history included charges of extortion, kidnapping, and murder. He was found guilty in April 2023 and given a 10-year prison term for the assassination of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. In March 2024, he was given a life sentence in connection with a case involving a forged arms license.
Apart from his illicit and political pursuits, Ansari’s familial history was noteworthy. He was the grandson of Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, an early President of the Indian National Congress and a well-known figure in the Indian independence movement. This pedigree brought to light the sharp differences between his life and that of his distinguished ancestors.
