Held annually on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas honours the gallantry of Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the 1999 Kargil War. India and Pakistan’s Kargil War, which began in May 1999, has come to an end with this incident. In the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorists and Pakistani soldiers had entered, Indian forces were able to secure the key position.
Kargil Vijay Diwas: A Look Back at History
India and Pakistan were involved in a major war in 1971 that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The two powers continue their fight to dominate Siachen Glacier by erecting military outposts on the surrounding mountain ranges. When the two countries tested their nuclear weapons in 1998, the animosity between the neighbours touched an all-time high. To defuse the tension, they signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999 and called for a bilateral, peaceful settlement to the Kashmir issue.
In order to obtain the position necessary to observe movement in the NH 1A during the winter of 1998–1999, the Pakistani army surreptitiously dispatched soldiers to the Drass and Batalik Sectors of Kargil in the Ladakh region. Their objective was to gain control over local military and civilian movements. The infiltrators were mistaken for radicalised terrorists by the Indian military. However, the Indian army quickly understood that it was a larger, more orchestrated operation. In response to the attack, the Indian side raised the troops to about two million, declaring war.
Kargil Vijay Diwas: Importance in 2024
On Kargil Diwas, Indian soldiers pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifice made during the 1999 conflict. 527 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the battle that took place in J&K. Important mountain outposts were taken over by Pakistani forces when they surreptitiously entered Indian t
erritory. Despite the challenging terrain and bad weather, the Indian Army fought valiantly and recaptured these stations. When the Pakistani army had to retreat, India was declared the victor.
