The Indian Premier League (IPL) season is underway, with three exciting matchups thus far. This Sunday’s first doubleheader features the Rajasthan Royals (RR) against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium in Jaipur will host the fourth match of the 2024 season. The brilliantly balanced Rajasthan Royals, led by Sanju Samson, finished fifth in the previous season and finished second in 2022. However, in the last two seasons, the KL Rahul-led LSG made it to the playoffs.
All Eyes On LSG’s KL Rahul
Before Sunday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match between the Rajasthan Royals and the Lucknow Super Giants, all eyes will be on KL Rahul’s form and ability to play after recovering from a quadriceps injury. In their first IPL match, KL Rahul is expected to lead LSG.
Rahul’s right quadriceps have been hurting him for the last four Test matches he played against England. In addition, he had to miss four months of cricket in 2018 due to thigh surgery.
The captain of LSG, who led the team to consecutive playoffs in their first two IPL seasons, will want to step it up both as a leader and as a hitter. Rahul is expected to play only as a batter, giving up the glove, but there is a catch: carrying more weight increases his chances of being selected for the Twenty20 World Cup team.
Rajasthan Royals’ Field Plan
Sanju Samson is also vying for the position of wicketkeeper in the Indian team for the ICC tournament, and like him, he would be eager to settle into a groove early on.
In the 2022 final, RR was on the verge of winning their first championship since 2008 and their second, but the Gujarat Titans crushed them. They started the previous season off strong but ultimately finished in sixth place. In addition to captain Samsom, RR’s batting lineup is robust, featuring players like the highly effective Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler. Dhruv Jurel is another one of their finishers; he impressed against England. However, Samson might try to strengthen the middle order by adding Rovman Powell of the West Indies to join fellow citizen Shimron Hetmyer.
