Hours after Ottawa’s harsh statement rejecting the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the probe into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the government called a Canadian ambassador.
The Ministry of External Affairs called Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner to India, Stewart Wheeler, to explain the country’s decision.
India Accuses PM, Justine Trudeau
Sanjay Kumar Verma, the Indian High Commissioner to Canada, was designated as a “person of interest” in the country’s Nijjar murder probe on Monday.
India responded to this with force, accusing Prime Minister Justine Trudeau of engaging in “vote bank politics” and failing to take adequate action against separatist elements within Canadian borders.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a harsh statement, claiming that despite repeated demands, the Canadian government has not shared a single piece of evidence linking India to the killing of Nijjar.
The India-Canada Fallout
“We learned yesterday from a diplomatic cable from Canada that the Indian High Commissioner along with other diplomats may be “persons of interest” in relation to an ongoing inquiry in that nation. The Indian government vehemently denounces these absurd accusations and attributes them to the Trudeau administration’s vote-bank politics-focused political strategy.
“Despite repeated demands from our end, the Canadian government has not disclosed a single piece of proof with the Government of India since Prime Minister Trudeau made specific claims in September 2023. This most recent action comes after exchanges where claims were made without supporting evidence once more. This makes it clear that demonizing India for political purposes is being done on purpose under the guise of an investigation,” the statement said.
When Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Indian government operatives were involved in the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil in September of last year, ties between India and Canada fell apart. Those accusations were dismissed by New Delhi as “motivated and absurd”.
