Almost 1.5 years have passed since the attack on the Adani Group by American short-seller Hindenburg Research. It is prepared with another explosive report. It had caused the group stocks to plummet and its subsequent public offer to be derailed by accusing Adani of financial misconduct and manipulating stocks.
Something Big By Hindenburg
In an attempt to spark interest and attract attention, Hindenburg teased the public with the post “Something big soon, India” on X. Hindenburg has the potential to frighten investors even before it releases its assessment since many are anticipating a significant correction in the Indian stock market as a result of valuation worries. Notably, according to Reuters’ story based on information from sources, Adani Enterprises Ltd. is probably going to start a $1 billion share sale by mid-September. Adani Enterprises will be back in the public markets with the issuance of its current shares. The Hindenburg attack forced the flagship business to postpone its $2.5 billion share sale in February of last year. However, Adani might not be the Hindenburg target this time. It may be any other organization or business.
What We Know About The Teaser
The purpose of the Hindenburg teaser is to supposedly destabilize the market by piqueing interest and igniting speculation. In contrast to other research agencies’ analyses of listed firms, Hindenburg’s approach is characterized by sensationalism. It had called the Adani group “the largest con in corporate history” in its investigation against the group published the previous year.
This massive accusation turned out to be an exaggerated hit piece. One year later, investors restored faith in Adani and the company’s shares recovered losses. Many believe that the Supreme Court’s ongoing investigation is unlikely to uncover anything as harmful as the Hindenburg report said.
In a preliminary report released in May of last year, an expert committee established by the Supreme Court declared that it had observed “no evident pattern of manipulation” in the Adani firms and that there had been no regulatory failure. However, it pointed out a number of changes the SEBI made between 2014 and 2019 that limited the regulator’s capacity to look into claims, saying that its investigation into purported infractions involving money flows from offshore organizations had “drawn a blank”.
A Petition
A petitioner in the Adani-Hindenburg matter filed a plea last month, but the Supreme Court rejected it. The petitioner wanted a review of the January 3 ruling, which denied the request to establish a Special Investigation Team or a CBI investigation into Hindenburg’s claims. Because the market regulator Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was carrying out a “comprehensive investigation” that “inspires confidence,” the top court rejected the order for a CBI or SIT probe in its January ruling.
Many believe the Hindenburg campaign on Adani actually fizzled out because it did not cause the group any harm beyond a few months, albeit the accuracy of Hindenburg’s charges will only be determined by the Sebi report in its final form.
A Wave Of Criticism For Hindenburg
The veracity of Hindenburg was called into question, with many claiming that the Adani report was a hit piece funded by activist, philanthropist, and billionaire George Soros. A Sebi notice to Hindenburg, however, scrutinized the short-seller and its operations in addition to these accusations.
Will the latest hit job hinted at by Hindenburg have the same impact as the one that caused a significant decline in Adani stocks last year, given the numerous uncertainties surrounding Hindenburg’s attack on Adani and the accusations circling around its operations?
Many investors may write off Hindenburg’s next research as just another exaggerated attack, given that its Adani campaign was unsuccessful last year. Its own reputation might raise doubts, which would lessen the impact. However, a lot will depend on how precise the report’s information is. The Adani Group had stated that there wasn’t much new information in the Hindenburg study. Hindenburg’s report has the potential to have a devastating effect on its subject if it focuses on specific wrongdoings of enormous scope rather than rehashing previous accusations.
