The director of Ego Media Pvt Ltd, the advertising company in charge of the billboard that fell in Ghatkopar on May 13 and left 16 people dead and 74 injured,Bhavesh Bhinde, was taken into custody by the Mumbai Police on Thursday.
The Unfortunate Ghatkopar Hoarding Collapse

The 120×120-foot advertising hoarding that Bhinde’s company had erected in Pant Nagar, Ghatkopar East, fell on May 13 due to a brief period of unusually high winds and rain. 16 people have perished as a result of the enormous billboard that collapsed on a busy gas pump, trapping almost 100 people beneath it.
The hoarding was constructed on a 10-year lease, in violation of the 40 by 40-foot maximum allowable size. In order to claim the title of largest commercial hoarding in India, the firm submitted an application to the Limca Book of Records.
Mumbai Police Take Charge
Bhinde was charged under sections 34 (common intention), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code by the Pant Nagar police after the incident on Monday. Over ten police units from Gujarat and Mumbai were assembled to track down Bhinde, who had absconded from the city.
Notably, Bhinde is the subject of two further cases that have been filed in Mulund—one for molestation and rape and the other for cheating.
In January of this year, a lady working in his office filed a rape and molestation allegation against him. Bhinde was not taken into custody by the Mulund police despite having a chargesheet against him because he was able to obtain anticipatory bail from the Bombay High Court. In 2016, a second case was filed at the same police station.
Additionaly, 21 charges of fine under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, were filed against him prior to 2009. In 2009, Bhinde ran as an independent from the Mulund constituency in the assembly election.
