Mr. Patil, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sangli seat, is the grandson of the former chief minister of Maharashtra Vasantdada Patil.
Delhi, New:
Vishal Patil, an independent member of the Maharashtra Lok Sabha, met with Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, on Thursday and offered his support for the party.
Mr. Patil, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sangli seat, is the grandson of the former chief minister of Maharashtra Vasantdada Patil.
Former Congress leader Mr. Patil ran as an Independent in the elections following the Shiv Sena-UBT’s allocation of the Sangli parliamentary seat under the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition’s seat-sharing agreement.
Mr. Kharge noted on X, “Welcoming the support of the elected MP from Sangli, Shri Vishal Patil (@patilvishalvp) to the Congress party.” Patil also got to know Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, two previous presidents of the Congress.
The Congress secured the most seats—99—among the opposition INDIA alliance in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections. With 233 seats, the opposing coalition prevailed.
Congress’s Strong Ties To Sangli
“Even though running on a Congress ticket was no longer an option, voters still supported me despite Congress’s radical views. I need to remember this. I therefore gave Congress my support after being elected. I’ve written Mallikarjun Kharge a letter of support today. I saw Rahul and Sonia Gandhi to receive their approval. We’ll collaborate,” Mr. Patil said to the assembled press.
The Congress has always had strong ties to Sangli, according to AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, and Patil has given the party unwavering support because of this.
“This is a truly fitting move which takes the legacy of Congress stalwart Vasantdada Patil ji forward,” Venugopal stated. Mr. Patil is the son of Sangli-based Congress Lok Sabha MP Prakashbapu Patil, who has served five terms. After Prakashbapu passed away in 2005, a by poll saw his son Pratik Patil emerge victorious in Sangli.
Vishal took over after Pratik, a union minister in the UPA administration, abruptly announced his retirement from politics.
