Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin said on Friday that the methanol that killed 47 people in the Kallakurichi district was made in nearby Puducherry. At the same time, he said that the DMK government will keep up its “strong measures” against “anti-social elements.”
47 People Have Lost Their Lives So Far In The Hooch Tragedy
Stalin responded to a Special Calling Attention Motion regarding the matter that revealed the administration’s incapacity to regulate the production and distribution of illicit liquor. He stated that up to 164 residents of Karunapuram and the surrounding areas had been admitted to government hospitals in Kallakurichi, Salem, Villupuram, and Puducherry as a result of consuming counterfeit alcohol.
Stalin declared, “47 people have died so far,” and vowed to prosecute everyone responsible for the horrific event that has left several women and children without parents. Tests on samples taken shortly after the occurrence on Wednesday verified that the poisonous substance methanol—which was present in the fake liquor—was the reason for the deaths.
Stalin stated, “Within hours of the incident, the government suspended superintendent of police Samay Singh Meena and transferred district collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath. Preliminary investigations by the revenue and police departments have established that methanol has been sourced from Puducherry.”
The Twin Hooch Tragedy Of 2023
In the meantime, the state government was asked to explain how the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy was permitted to occur within a year of the twin hooch tragedy in 2023, which claimed the lives of 22 people. The Madras High Court was hearing a plea filed by the AIADMK asking for a CBI investigation into the incident.
Stalin announced special measures in addition to detailing the actions taken to treat the injured. These included paying for the education of children who lost one or both of their parents during the tragedy, on top of the Rs 10 lakh solatium given to the families of each victim, until the children completed their UG.
“The government will deposit Rs 5 lakh in the name of the children who lost both parents, which will be given to them with interest after they attain the age of 18. An additional Rs 3 lakh will be given to children who lost one parent. Besides, the government will provide Rs 5,000 each to children who have lost both parents (or) one parent,” Stalin added.
Stalin Govt. Detains 58 People Under The Goondas Act
Speaking on the actions taken by his government to end the production and sale of illicit booze, Stalin stated that since the DMK took office in May 2021, up to 14,606 cases had been filed and 10,154 people had been arrested in the Kallakurichi district alone. Stalin stated, “Of these, 58 people have been detained under the Goondas Act.” Stalin said, “4.6 lakh people were arrested in connection with the brewing and sale of illicit liquor, and approximately 4.65 lakh cases were registered in this regard. Of these, 565 have been detained under the Goondas Act since May 2021.”
Stalin responded to inquiries about the actions taken by the government following the 2023 twin hooch tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people, by stating that the CB-CID had detained 21 individuals, 8 of whom were arrested under the Goondas Act, and had started disciplining 16 police officers in relation to the Villupuram incident.
