On Tuesday, five flights, including an Air India trip from Delhi to Chicago, received online threats on social networking platform X threatening to blow up. The Air India aircraft headed for Chicago was rerouted to the airfield in Iqaluit, Canada.
The following airlines were targeted: an Indigo flight 6E 98 from Dammam to Lucknow; an Air India flight from Delhi to Chicago (AI 127); an Akasa Air flight from Siliguri to Bengaluru (QP 1373); an Air India Express plane from Jaipur to Bengaluru via Ayodhya (IX765); and a SpiceJet plane from Darbhanga to Mumbai (SG116).
Airlines On High Alert; Security Toughens
According to official sources who spoke to news agency PTI, security officials conducted targeted counterterrorism exercises at several airports in response to bomb threats.
Sources claim that on Tuesday, an X handle made threats against four flights. Flight-tracking websites show that the SpiceJet and Akasa Air flights have already landed, while the Air India Express flight was subjected to a security check at the Ayodhya airport. The Delhi to Chicago Air India flight has been rerouted to Canada in order to undergo security procedures.
PTI was notified by aviation security sources that all cases are being handled with caution. The reports suggest that the person using the X handle threatened the airline and police handles, saying that bombs had been placed aboard these flights.
Air India Faces Major Disruptions
On Monday, approximately 600 passengers were affected by severe interruptions to three international flights operated by two Indian airlines due to a spate of bogus bomb threat communications. The threats are taken very seriously, and as a result, one flight, Air India flight AI 119 from Mumbai to New York, was rerouted to Delhi for extensive inspections.
IndiGo’s flights 6E1275 from Mumbai to Muscat and 6E56 from Mumbai to Jeddah had delays as security teams carried out thorough checks prior to permitting them to reach their destinations. Thankfully, it turned out that the threats were false, but the episode highlights the continuous difficulties with aircraft schedules and passenger safety.
