As Donald Trump takes the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025, outgoing President Joe Biden promised Thursday that he would see to it that a peaceful transition of power occurs. He asserted that in a democracy, the people will always win out.
Biden Admires Harris’ Efforts
In his opening statements following Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, Biden lavished admiration on the 2024 Democratic contender, claiming that she put her “whole heart and effort” into her campaign.
After his catastrophic debate against Trump in June, Biden withdrew from the White House race in July due to a controversy surrounding his age and health. “She gave her whole heart and effort, and she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign they ran,” Biden said.
“We accept the choice the country made.”
“Yesterday, I spoke with President Trump to congratulate him on his victory, and I assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. That’s what the American people deserve,” he said.
Biden claimed to have called Harris a “public servant” during their conversation, and he added that the Democratic Party was having a hard time accepting the election defeat.
“Campaigns are contests of competing visions. The country chooses one or the other. We accept the choice the country made. I will do my duty as president. I fulfill my oath and I will honor the Constitution. On January 20, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America,” he said.
A Message To The Democrats From Biden
In a message to Democrats, Biden said, “I know it’s a difficult time,” adding that failures were inevitable and that quitting was unacceptable. You’re in pain. I see you, I hear you. But remember. Remember everything we’ve done. This presidency has been historic. Not as a result of my presidency. due to the actions of both you and us.”
After defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 and losing to Biden in 2020, Trump becomes the first president in 132 years to win non-consecutive terms. A near-clean sweep in all seven states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and Wisconsin, prepared the ground for his outstanding performance.
The Associated Press reported that Trump has so far received 295 electoral votes, well surpassing the 270-majority threshold, while Harris has received 226. The two swing states where Trump is leading, Nevada and Arizona, are still counting votes.
