Continued heavy rains have caused waterlogging in a number of Maharashtrian towns, including Thane, Palghar, Mumbai, Pune, and others. This has caused traffic jams and delayed train and airline operations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all Mumbai schools and institutions due to the unceasing rain.
Between 4 am and 1 pm on Thursday, more than 100 mm of rain fell in certain parts of Mumbai, according to officials. With 157 mm of rain during this period, the Malpa Dongri region in Andheri received the greatest rainfall, followed by Paspoli in Powai with 155 mm and Dindoshi with 154 mm.
Pune Residential Areas Stay Flooded
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, several residential areas have flooded, and rain-related accidents in the district have claimed four lives. To assist the local government in accelerating the relief efforts, Pune District Magistrate (DM) Suhas Divsae has requested the assistance of army forces.
In the meantime, several Indian Army contingents have been called in to evacuate the impacted individuals and relocate them to safer areas of Pune. Thus far, almost 400 individuals have been evacuated. According to sources, two columns of the Army were stationed in the heavily flooded Sinhagad Road region.
In addition, groups from the district and city emergency management cells, the fire department, and the NDRF were called out to assist with relief efforts.
CM And Various Airlines Comment
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, has stated that in the event of a crisis, the affected individuals will be evacuated to Pune, where nonstop rain has flooded low-lying dwellings and residential colonies. “If the need arises, we have told them to airlift people. There is no need to worry,” the Chief Minister said.
A number of airlines have also sent a caution, notifying travelers that heavy rains had caused some of their flights to Mumbai to be delayed and diverted.
In the same vein, IndiGo also released a statement on X, recommending travelers to confirm the status of their flights prior to heading to the airport.
According to SpiceJet, another low-cost airline, all departures and arrivals from Mumbai airport may be impacted by inclement weather.
Directives For Rescue And Relief Issued In Pune And Thane
State Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assessed the situation, called Divisional Commissioners and other officials in Thane, Pune, and Mumbai, and issued directives for rescue and relief efforts as well as maintaining vigilance.
In a post on X, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also pleaded with Mumbai residents not to leave the city due to the “red alert” that was issued and is expected to last until Friday morning. In addition, a red alert has been issued by the weather department for Mumbai and the nearby districts of Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, prompting the declaration of a vacation in all city schools and colleges.
Tragic Incidents Due To Heavy Rains
At least four people died in rain-related incidents in Pune. In the Deccan region of the city, three men perished from electrocution while attempting to move their handcart, which they used to serve egg dishes. In the Tahmini Ghat part of the city, a landslide claimed one life and injured another.
A local official stated that the district administration and local police were working to clear the debris from the road and that once it was done, it would be available to traffic.
Another incidence involves a mudslide in the Lavasa area that may have trapped four to five people inside a cottage. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been sent to low-lying locations where flooding and inundation are predicted.
Pune Under Red Alert
In the meantime, the Khadakwasla dam is releasing water at a rate of 9,400 cusecs as a result of significant rainfall in Pune’s catchment areas. Residents in low-lying regions have also been advised to stay vigilant by the district government. Pune is under a red alert from the IMD for the next 24 hours.
Following a period of intense rain, the Raigad district of the state’s local government decided to close schools, colleges, and other educational facilities on Thursday. The sub-divisions of Wada and Vikramgad in Palghar have also received a similar directive.
For both of the districts, which are on the west coast of the district, the weather service has issued a “red alert.” Meanwhile, the Panchganga River was flowing barely inches below the danger mark on Wednesday in the Kolhapur district, prompting the issuance of a warning.
