In the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player, surpassing the mark held by Shreyas Iyer. On Sunday, December 24, Rishabh Pant sold for Rs 27 crore to the Lucknow Super Giants in the mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
A 27-Crore Bid For Rishabh Pant
When Punjab Kings outbid other teams in the first round of bidding for the first batch of marquee players on Sunday, Shreyas Iyer broke Mitchell Starc’s record (Rs 24.75 crore). Rishabh Pant saw a historic bidding war, but the record was broken in just a few minutes.
Remarkably, while the bid was with Lucknow at Rs 20.75 crore, the Delhi Capitals used the Right To Match card for Rishabh Pant. It was anticipated that Delhi would not run after all the rumors of a terrible split between Pant and Delhi. They went ahead and utilized the RTM card, though.
Sanjeev Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants, increased the proposal to Rs 27 crore since they were unwilling to let Rishabh Pant go.
The Bidding Game
In the IPL 2025, Rishabh Pant will probably take KL Rahul’s spot as LSG’s captain.
- At first, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Lucknow Super Giants engaged in a fierce bidding battle.
- RCB withdrew from the race at Rs 11 crore, but it didn’t seem like the two would stop.
- SunRisers Hyderabad joined the competition with a purse of just Rs 45 crore at the moment.
- LSG stayed in the race and placed an offer of Rs 20.75 crore after SRH withdrew at Rs 20.50 crore.
- To the surprise of many, the owners of the Delhi Capitals raised the price for the RTM.
But LSG raised an incredible Rs 27 crore. - The new IPL auction regulations allow for a bid to be placed following the raising of the RTM card. The team the player played for the previous season may then match the bid.
A New Perspective For Lucknow After Rishabh Pant

In a mysterious post before to the October 31 retention deadline, Pant questioned his fans and followers if he would find bidders for the auction. Attend the auction if you can. Will I be sold, and if so, how much will it cost? (sic),” he inquired.
In response to a statement from Sunil Gavaskar, Pant also clarified that his departure from the Delhi Capitals was not due to financial considerations. “My retention wasn’t about the money for sure that I can say,”
In his response to the article on X, Rishabh Pant stated, “I can say with certainty that my retention wasn’t about the money.” After retaining Nicholas Pooran for an incredible Rs 21 crore, the Super Giants were anticipated to name him captain.
