Authorities reported that during an air display in Chennai to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force, three spectators lost their lives and 230 others were hospitalized as a result of dehydration. The air show, which was supposed to be an exciting demonstration of the Indian Air Force’s flying skills, turned disastrous as a result of the overwhelming number of spectators and excessive temperatures.
Chennai Airshow victims identified
The victims of the event were named Karthikeyan (34), from Thiruvottiyur, John (56), from Korukuppet, and Srinivasan (48), from Perungalathur.
K. Annamalai, the chief of the Tamil Nadu BJP, expressed his profound dismay at the incident and pointed the finger squarely at the DMK-led administration in the state. “It is not acceptable to dismiss the loss of five lives as an accident,” Annamalai said, pointing out that the administration was negligent in providing transportation and basic safety precautions. He went on to attack Chief Minister MK Stalin, saying that he prioritized political advancement before public safety.
Annamalai attacked the DMK government in his caustic remarks, claiming that it was more concerned with family politics than with solving the needs of the people. He demanded that the Chief Minister answer for “the misery of hundreds of families” that were impacted by the accident. Annamalai emphasized, “The public must be held accountable for the Chief Minister.”
Visitors Stranded In Chennai
Leader of the AIADMK Edappadi K. Palaniswami offered his sympathies to the victims’ families while expressing his sorrow and rage. He blasted the Tamil Nadu government for its poor management in a sharply worded tweet, saying, “My strong condemnation to the MK Stalin government for failing to provide proper security for this event.”
Due to inadequate coordination by traffic authorities, the great air show came to a complete halt, leaving thousands of visitors stranded in Chennai. Similar incidents were seen throughout the city as the enormous audience at Marina Beach found it difficult to leave following the event.
What Went Down At The Event
The air display started at 11 am and lasted till 1 pm with the goal of getting around 16 lakh people to witness it in order to get into the Limca Book of World Records. But thousands of people had already flocked there as early as 8 am to guarantee a decent place in the scorching sun. Even before the event began, a number of elderly participants passed out from heat exhaustion.
The removal of neighboring water vendors, which prevented people from getting access to drinking water, made the gathering even more uncomfortable. The massive throng tried to leave simultaneously onto Kamarajar Salai as the event came to an end, causing a total traffic jam.
Many were compelled to sit by the side of the road to regain their strength since they were exhausted by the heat and traffic.
Thankfully, others living close to the shore helped out by providing those in need with drinking water. However, as more people looked for other means to get home, metro stations started to fill up.
The public’s outrage over the lack of planning and preparedness has been triggered by the chaotic aftermath. Concerns over crowd control led to the cancelation of actor Vijay’s TVK public meeting, and it appears that the authorities did not adequately accommodate the thousands of people that attended the air show.
