Four Paralympic champions will be crowned on September 5 at La Chapelle Arena during the second day of the Para Powerlifting competition. There will be two finals in the afternoon (local time) and two more in the evening.
Here’s the full itinerary for day two in Paris, along with a list of competitors to keep an eye on.
Women’s Para Powerlifting
The women’s up to 50 kg category promises to be an intriguing competition to start the day’s games. Olivia Broome, the bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020 and the current world champion from Great Britain is the clear favorite to win the gold.
Rising talents from the most recent World Cups, though, guarantee fierce competition. Notably, Broome is likely to face competition from China’s Jinping Xiao, who broke the Asian record with a 123 kg lift in Tbilisi, and Bose Bejide. Hu Dandan of China and Nigerian world record holder Esther Oyema will not be competing.
Qi Yongkai Aims For Glory Amidst Strong Contenders
Next up is the men’s up to 59 kg final, in which Qi Yongkai of China is the frontrunner.
Herbert Aceituno of El Salvador, who won medals in both the Paralympics in Tokyo 2020 and the global championships in Dubai in 2023, will be a formidable opponent for the reigning Paralympic and global champion.
Mohsen Bakhtiar of Iran, who has performed well this season, also poses a serious threat. Osman of Egypt still holds the world record for this category, which he established at the Rio 2016 Olympics with 211 kg.
Mariana Shevchuk The Current Para Powerlifting Champion
The women’s up to 55 kg final is one of the day’s highlights.
Mariana Shevchuk of Ukraine, the current Paralympic champion and gold medallist at the 2021 World Championships, and Rehab Ahmed of Egypt, the current world champion and world record holder with a lift of 135 kg, are expected to compete in an exciting match. Ahmed, who won a silver medal in the 50 kg lower weight division in Tokyo 2020, will be motivated to take first place.
The men’s up to 65kg final will round out the day. The defending world champion and 222 kg world record holder, Zou Yi of China, starts as the favorite.
