Dr Sandip Ghosh’s tenure was marked with allegations of mismanagement and financial irregularities; his quick appointment intensified outrage in college.
Widespread Protests Over The Rape
Following widespread protests over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor, Dr. Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position as principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday. This move incited even more outrage from the West Bengal Government when it named Ghosh as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH).
The new principal of RG Kar Medical College was also selected by the government. Dr. Ghosh has been replaced at RG Kar Medical College by Dr. Suhrita Paul, the OSD (Officer on Special Duty) of the West Bengal Health and Family Welfare Department. The new OSD at Swasthya Bhawan will be Dr. Ajay Kumar Ray, who was succeeded at CNMCH by Dr. Sandip Ghosh.
Addressing Media Persons To Announce His Resignation
Due to the growing public outrage and growing allegations of financial irregularities and mismanagement at the government-run Kolkata institute, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who had been under tremendous pressure, resigned and explained it as a result of “moral responsibility” and “political conspiracy.” The state administration dismissed Sanjay Vashisth, the superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a day ago.
Addressing media persons to announce his resignation, Ghosh on Monday said, “The sole demand of people of the state was my resignation. So, I am resigning willingly and not under any pressure… I am being defamed on social media. Some people are spreading false accusations against me. Students are being provoked to seek my removal. The deceased doctor was like my child, and I want the guilty to be punished. As a parent, I am resigning.”
Professor of Orthopaedics, Ghosh was promoted from his previous role at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) and named principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in mid-2021. While there were no accusations against him during his time at CNMC, there have been issues surrounding his appointment to RG Kar. The state Health Department twice moved him, but each time they swiftly put him back in.
He had been transferred to Murshidabad Medical College in May of last year, but the transfer was canceled 48 hours later by the state health department.
Manicktala Main Boys’ Hostel At The College Saw A Raging Incident
After being moved to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital once more in the second instance, he returned to RG Kar within a month. Manicktala Main Boys’ Hostel at the college saw a raging incident in September 2023. Already, trainee physicians who were close to Ghosh were being blamed. On October 11, Ghosh was sent to Murshidabad Medical College. His return to RG Kar Hospital occurred in October.
Serious accusations of financial embezzlement and irregularities in procurement procedures were made against Ghosh in the past by faculty members at RG Kar Hospital.
It is well known that the Health Department twice removed Ghosh from the esteemed principal’s chair at RG Kar Medical College. But for whatever reason, he held the job. Adhikari had posted X following the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. “He has such influence that once a government order for his removal was canceled within 48 hours, and another time after he was removed and transferred to the Murshidabad Medical College but found his way back to RG Kar within a month,” Adhikari had stated.
His departure was likewise welcomed by Dr. Manas Gumta of the Association of Health Service Doctors. “We have insisted that no inquiry be conducted while he (Ghosh) is in the chair.
