In the final Group M match of the 2017 Paris Olympics, India’s P.V. Sindhu defeated Kristin Kuuba of Estonia on Wednesday to advance to the Round of 16 in the women’s singles badminton competition. At the La Chapelle Arena, Sindhu outplayed Kuuba and won 21-5, 21-10, after 34 minutes of play.
The First 14 Minutes Of P.V. Sindhu’s Game
In just 14 minutes, P.V. Sindhu won the first game 21–5, controlling the pace. The Indian shuttler, in the meantime, kept up her good play and won the second game in 19 minutes, 21-10.
In her next round of 16 encounters, P.V. Sindhu might take on He Bingjiao of the People’s Republic of China. Sindhu won her medal in the Tokyo Olympics earlier in the competition against He Bingjiao.
In Sindhu’s earlier Group M encounter, the Indian shuttler defeated Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq of the Maldives in the women’s singles event with ease, starting her journey towards her third Olympic medal.
In both games, P.V. Sindhu played with perseverance and self-assurance, limiting her opponent to single digits. After a 29-minute match, she won 21-9, 21-6 to start her season.
The Pursuit Of P.V.Sindhu’s Third Olympic Medal
In her pursuit of her third Olympic medal, Sindhu showed her dominance right away. She tricked her opponent into playing a loose shot by using every square inch of the badminton court to her advantage. This was the second encounter between Razzaq and Sindhu. In their first meeting, the Indian shuttler easily defeated the Maldivian shuttler, and history was repeated in Paris.
With both shuttlers competing head-to-head, the first game got underway. Following a point advantage by Sindhu, Razzaq rallied to tie the score.
The pattern persisted until the scoreboard showed 4–4. Sindhu stepped it up and went on a scoring binge, scoring ten points in a row. Though Sindhu’s 10-point run was eventually broken by Razzaq, the first game was virtually out of her control.
With a superb angled flip, P.V. Sindhu turned the score into a 19-6 advantage. Razzaq rallied back, making a valiant effort to win three straight points to mount a late comeback. A beautiful drop shot changed the score to 19–9. By the end, Sindhu had sealed the first game with a score of 21-9 in 13 minutes.
A 3-Point Win
For the Maldives shuttler, it was a similar tale in the second game. Her attempts to surpass Sindhu’s technical skills failed.
The Indian shuttler won three straight points in the span of a single glance before the net blocked her stroke. Razzaq was given a window of opportunity to make a return, which she took full advantage of. She trailed Sindhu by only one point after winning three straight games to make the score 4-3.
Razzaq finally began to trail, exactly like in the first set; thus, her brief rallies proved to be ineffective. After a 21-6 victory in the second game, Sindhu sealed the match thanks to Razzaq’s poor defense.
