After Manu Bhaker, Ramita is the second Indian woman shooter to qualify for the medal round in the last 20 years. Ramita Jindal has guaranteed herself a spot in the 10m air rifle final of the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking a historic event for Indian shooting. Elavenil Valarivan, a fellow countryman, did not survive. After Manu Bhaker, Ramita is the second Indian woman shooter to qualify for the medal round in the last 20 years. In addition, she is the first female Indian rifle shooter to compete at the Olympics since Suma Shirur, her mentor, did so in Athens in 2004.
Ramita Jindal: The Medal Round
With a score of 631.5, Ramita appeared to be eliminated before the final series. She qualified for the medal round by placing fifth in the standings. After leading at the midway point, Elavenil Valarivan lost a lot of ground in the next three series and ended up finishing tenth in the qualifying round. Hyojin Ban of Korea won the round with a record-breaking score of 634.5 points, qualifying for the Olympics.
With two strong scores of 10.5 and 10.9, Ramita started out third after the first two shots. Valarivan, meanwhile, started out in eighth place with a score of 10.6. On the other hand, Ramita’s standing began to decline by the time Valarivan took the third spot after her third attempt.
The 5th And 8th Slots
Valarivan continued to be consistent; after eight shots, her lowest score was 10.4, and she was tied for fifth place. Ramita finished her first round with a score of 104.3, and after two shots, she led the second series with 21 points. With 105.8 points after her maiden series, Valarivan finished fourth. Her score at the start of the second series was 10.4. Ramita moved up the standings, finishing with a score of 10.9 on her fourteenth attempt.
With some outstanding shots in the second series, the 20-year-old kept getting closer to the top 10. With both Indian shooters looking to be in great shape, she moved up to the eighth position.
Valarivan clinched her spot in the top three with 53 points from her opening five shots of the second session. With 106 points at the end of the second series, Ramita got off to a great start in the third, scoring 31.3 to take sixth place in the rankings. With 106.1 points at the completion of the second series, Valarivan took second place.
Ramita Jindal: The Journey To The Top Ten
Valarivan had a strong start to the third series, moving up to the top rank after hitting 10.6 on her first three shots. Despite some difficulties in the third series, Ramita was able to bounce back and finish in the top 8.
But neither shooter’s third series ended happily. Ramita scored 104.9, while Ela scored 104.4. Despite this, both had a great start to the fourth series and returned to the top 8. After a rocky start, Ela steadily improved and moved up to fourth place, while Ramita returned to the top eight with a great fourth-series finish.
Ela was still in the running in the fifth set, but Ramita lost her spot in the top 8 following a few poor shots. Ela scored a 10.4 to start the last series and then a 10.9.
But when Ela began to fade from the race, Ramita overtook her countrywoman, placing 10th after her 59th shot came in at a mere 9.8 points, giving her a total of 630.7 points. In the last round, Ramita continued to play well and finished with 105.7 points.
