Deadpool & Wolverine from Marvel Studios and Disney opened to a record-breaking $38.5 million in preview sales on Thursday. This is by far the finest performance for an R-rated movie and ranks No. 8 on the list of all films’ best previews, not adjusted for inflation. It becomes part of an exclusive cast that includes films from the biggest series in Hollywood, Star Wars, Avengers, Spider-Man, and the last Harry Potter picture.
Presenting Deadpool & Wolverine
The highly anticipated Deadpool 3 sequel, directed by Shawn Levy, stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and introduces Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. (The fact that the three are close friends is a major bonus for the movie’s international promotional tour, which culminated on Thursday with a trip at Comic-Con’s Hall H, where fans enjoyed a panel discussion and a showing of the two hours and eight minutes of footage.)
The intense global tour is undoubtedly paying off, as the Deadpool threequel is bringing in enormous sums of money abroad. In its first two days, it brought in $64.8 million, which is 57% more than the first movie and 48% more than the sequel.
Because of the R-rating, it is challenging to determine whether the record-breaking preview gross in North America affects the weekend opening prediction of $160 million to $175 million. Although David Herrin’s The Quorom thinks it possible, studios and the majority of box office analysts think it would be difficult for an R-rated film to make $200 million in its American premiere.
Strong reviews and even stronger exits—Deadpool & Wolverine has a 97 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and five out of five on PostTrack—are helping the movie.
The First R Rated Film Ever
When the first Deadpool opened at $133.7 million domestically in February 2016, it set a record for the largest start ever for an R-rated film and demonstrated that a superhero movie could still pull large audiences in spite of its rating. After making $18.6 million in previews, Deadpool 2 premiered to $125.5 million, the highest amount ever for an R-rated movie, a little over two years later.
After Marvel parent firm Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which held the rights to the X-Men universe of characters, Feige’s Marvel took over the Deadpool brand. The first R-rated film ever released by Disney, Marvel, or any other studio is Deadpool & Wolverine.
Reynolds, who is also a skilled salesman and producer, has been pursuing female viewers with the help of Disney and his marketing team at Maximum Effort. Taylor Swift, who is close friends with both Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively, used her influence on social media on Wednesday to promote the film with a link to get tickets “if you like to see things that are unspeakably awesome.” “Shout out to Wade Wilson, a.k.a., my god kids’ sperm donor,” she said in a dejected manner.
