India commemorates the anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s passing on July 4 each year. He was one of India’s greatest philosophers and spiritual leaders, born on January 12, 1863. He was the principal pupil of the Indian saint Ramakrishna, and his birth name was Narendranath Datta. It is credited to him that yoga and Vedanta were brought to the West.
Swami Vivekananda And His Work
In addition to being credited with advancing interfaith understanding and elevating Hinduism to the rank of a significant global religion in the late nineteenth century, Vivekananda is recognized as the founder of contemporary Indian nationalism.
Together with his fellow followers, Swami Vivekananda formally vowed to adopt sannyasa in 1887, giving up worldly pleasures and devoting their lives to spiritual endeavors. This was the start of his lifelong quest to disseminate the teachings of his mentor. He established the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Objective, organizations devoted to serving humanity and advancing Vedantic philosophy, in order to promote this objective.
After Vivekananda made his well-known speech on September 11, 1893, at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, the world became acquainted with him. He was acknowledged for bringing Hinduism to the attention of a worldwide audience. He is well-versed in both religion and science.
Early Life And Death
Early on in life, Vivekananda showed an interest in spirituality. He would meditate in front of Hindu deity images and show a deep interest in all matters religious and spiritual. At the request of Maharaja Ajit Singh, the prince of the tiny Rajasthani state of Khetri, he took on the name Vivekananda.
On July 4, 1902, Swami Vivekananda passed away while in meditation. It is believed by his followers that he achieved Mahasamadhi, and that his death may have been caused by a cerebral artery rupture. It was previously predicted by Vivekananda that he would not live for forty years. In Belur, he was cremated next to the spot where Ramakrishna had been sixteen years earlier, on the banks of the Ganga river.
