Tuesday’s stampede during a “satsang” (religious gathering) in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of 116 people. A number of women and children were among the deceased. The deceased were transported to medical facilities in Hathras and the nearby Etah district.
Hathras Satsang Stampede: In Conversation With The Inspector General
It was revealed by Inspector General (Aligarh) Shalabh Mathur that 116 individuals had passed away thus far. “The matter will be filed with a FIR. The Satsang organizers will face legal action since the attendance at the event exceeded the allowed capacity. “A high-level investigation has been mandated,” stated Shalabh Mathur.
Senior police officer Rajesh Kumar Singh told the reporters that the stampede happened at a Satsang that was taking place in a village in the Hathras district. The Manav Mangal Milan Sadbhavna Samagam Committee arranged the Satsang for self-proclaimed godman Narayan Sakar Hari, also called Bhole Baba or Sakar Vishwa Hari. The district government has established helplines, 05722227041 and 05722227042, in response to the incident.
An eyewitness described the horrifying event: “We had come for the Satsang.” It was a sizable assembly. We started departing after the Satsang. The way out was constricted. A disturbance broke out as we attempted to leave toward the field, and we were at a loss for what to do. Numerous individuals have passed away.” Everyone left the “Satsang” after it was over. The road was constructed outside with a drain underneath it at a height. Person after person began to tumble into it. An additional eyewitness stated, “Some people were crushed.
The Ministers And President Share Their Condolences
President Droupadi Murmu said the occurrence was heartbreaking and offered his sympathies to the families of the deceased. “The news of the death of many devotees, including women and children, in the accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their family members and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured,” she posted on her official X handle.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I am receiving news of a tragic death in Hathras. I express my condolences to those who have lost their lives and wish for the injured to recover soon. The state government is engaged in rescue operations. The central government is in contact. All possible help will be provided to the victims.”
Taking to X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. May God give them strength to bear this pain. The local administration is engaged in relief work. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
CM Yogi Adityanatha Issues Directives To Families In Hathras
Yogi Adityanatha, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, took notice of the situation and gave the go-ahead for officials to hurry to the scene and begin providing aid. In addition to wishing the injured people a swift recovery, the Chief Minister has given orders to staff members to make sure the patients are receiving the right care at the hospital.
The Chief Secretary, two senior ministers, and the Director General of Police were sent to the location by Chief Minister Adityanath.”We have been instructed by the CM to reach the Hathras incident site and look into the matter and take the required decisions on behalf of the government. The number of deceased is continuously increasing.”
The Chief Minister also issued directives to give the families of the deceased and the injured Rs 2 lakh apiece in financial aid and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Moreover, tomorrow, Chief Minister Adityanath is scheduled to visit Hathras. He will meet with the victims’ families and assess the scene of the event. The Chief Minister Sanjay Prasad’s principal secretary would go with him.
The Opposition Expresses Criticism
According to news agency ANI, which cited government sources, a team led by the Aligarh Commissioner and the Additional Director General of Police, Agra, has been assembled to investigate the incident’s cause.
Anoop Pradhan, the MP for Hathras, discussed the event and said he would be going to the location where the stampede took over 80 lives. “I am going to the spot. I just spoke to the district magistrate. Many people have died,” he said.
Chief of the Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Yogi government, saying, “Since the state government was earlier notified about the large number of people going to attend the Satsang, it was their responsibility to ensure that appropriate measures should be taken.”
Calling it an “extremely painful” incident, Lok Sabha’s Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said, “I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured. The government and administration are requested to provide every possible treatment to the injured and relief to the affected families. All workers of India are requested to provide their cooperation in relief and rescue.”
