According to the NTA, they will likely hold a retest on June 23, with the results expected by June 30. Candidates will know their true scores without the grace marks and can choose to use these results or retake the exam.
On June 13, the Union government informed the Supreme Court that it would void the scorecards of the 1,563 applicants who received compensatory marks in the NEET-UG 2024 undergraduate medical entrance examination. These applicants are eligible to take the retest scheduled for June 23.
Unbalanced Circumstances
The court considered petitions contesting the grace marks granted to 1,563 students through the use of a “normalization formula” because they did not receive the entire 3.2 hours to complete the exam at their designated locations. Consequently, on the advice of a committee assembled by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the NEET, these candidates received compensatory marks.
However, after the decision to award grace marks faced a growing public outcry, the NTA established a second committee, which convened on June 10 and June 12.
Attorney Kanu Agrawal, speaking on behalf of the Union, stated that this committee believed the compensatory marks given to 1,563 students for lost time created an unfair scenario. Specifically, they awarded grace marks only for questions that were not attempted.
Retest the Choice
As a result, Mr. Agrawal notified the court that another examination would be held for the 1,563 candidates. The court ruled, “We will declare the results of the affected candidates who do not wish to appear for the re-examination based on their actual marks, without grace marks, obtained in the examination held on May 5, 2024.”
The court further stated that the actual results of the re-examination would determine the status of the 1,563 candidates who chose to participate and their prior test results from May 5 would be discarded.
Senior attorney Naresh Kaushik, representing the NTA, informed the court that they would announce the re-examination date on June 13. The agency scheduled the retest for June 23, with results to be released on June 30. The NTA added, “We will ensure the counseling session scheduled on July 6 is not disturbed.”
Allegations Of Paper Leaks
The pleas concerning grace marks were resolved by the Bench. The NTA was given a two-week deadline by the court to provide a response to the claims of question paper leaks and other issues. The court set the date for the subsequent hearing for July 8 while it heard another petition submitted by ten candidates.
Alakh Pandey, CEO of the online learning company Physics Wallah, submitted one of the petitions, arguing that the NTA’s decision to grant grace marks was “arbitrary” through the representation of attorney J. Sai Deepak.
