The much anticipated iOS 18 upgrade, which contains a generous helping of Apple’s proprietary AI, was just unveiled. But the supercharged Siri that aims to make you reconsider before making jokes about its skills won’t be the only thing that makes the WWDC 2024 keynote memorable. The major iPhone update coming this autumn has a ton of improvements that you have truly wanted for years, some of which may even entice me to install the preview beta.
iOS 18 appears to be a major deal, with modifications to Messages that will make my group chat laugh and a makeover of the Photos app that may confound some users before they swipe to success. In light of this, I’ve outlined the 11 most anticipated innovations for the iPhone this autumn so you won’t be caught off guard.
AI For The iPhone Is Called Apple Intelligence
We’re not shocked that Apple has joined the chorus of businesses introducing software packed with generative AI features, considering the product announcements for the first half of 2024. Not surprisingly, Apple renamed AI to Apple Intelligence; rebranding well-known features is a regular occurrence on our Apple event bingo card. Apple Intelligence, which is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and subsequent models (together with iPads and Macs with M-series processors), is full of gimmicks that people who follow the tech sector closely may recognize.
For instance, Apple Intelligence comes with a Rewrite tool that can assist you in rewriting your writing. The business indicated that this tool could be helpful in situations where you lack confidence. You can choose from three different style options: Friendly, Professional, and Concise. You can also request that your words be redone to “read like a poem.” This technology was present in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series phones, although it was of very little use. I’m not quite sold on this choice as a writer (and as someone who doesn’t trust generative AI technology).
Unmistakably Computer-Generated
A number of tools to create photos that appear “just right” or unmistakably computer-generated will be included in iOS 18. Regarding the former, a new image editing cleanup tool will enable you to eliminate undesired people and objects from pictures (much like the Magic Eraser found on smartphones like the Google Pixel 8). Regarding the latter, Apple has a brand-new tool for creating images called Image Playground, which comes with three exclusive styles: animation, illustration, and sketch. Using a few key terms, Image Playground creates a fresh image of contact, much like the new Chromebook Plus computers do for desktop wallpaper and video conference backgrounds. Apple demonstrated this feature in its presentation.
Although Apple has an inherent justification because all of the photographs are generated on the iPhone, the images didn’t look all that great. It didn’t even specify which picture database picture Playground was used for training, showing us images of a kitten dressed as a chef and a mother who doubles as a superhero. Regarding databases and generative AI, Apple also confirmed its collaboration with OpenAI during the WWDC keynote. As a result, iOS 18 will introduce ChatGPT-4o tools to the iPhone.
