According to the Hamas-run health ministry, an Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah had killed at least 45 individuals, including women and children. Videos captured the scene in the Tal al-Sultan area, where there was a big explosion and strong fires.
An Investigation Turned Tragedy
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declared that it was “investigating the circumstances of the deaths of civilians in the area” and that it had killed two “senior Hamas terrorists”. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, described it as a “tragedy”.
Eight rockets were fired by Hamas from Rafah towards Tel Aviv a few hours prior; they were the first long-range strikes on the key Israeli city since January.
Since the beginning of an Israeli ground assault in Rafah three weeks ago, about 800,000 people have left the area, but hundreds of thousands are still thought to be seeking refuge there. In a related development, Egypt’s military announced on Monday that it was looking into a shooting incident that claimed the life of an Egyptian security force member close to the Gaza border, south of Rafah.
The Israeli Defense Forces, who have taken over the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing, announced that they were in talks with Egyptian officials on a gunshot incident.
The People In Rafah Comment
The airstrike on Sunday, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent, struck makeshift tents next to a UN building in Tal al-Sultan, which is roughly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of Rafah’s downtown.
In graphic footage, first responders and onlookers were seen dragging many dead as a number of structures were set on fire next to a banner that said “Kuwaiti Peace Camp ‘1’.”
“We were securely seated at the front door of the residence. We heard a missile come out of nowhere, witness Fadi Dukhan told the Reuters news agency.
He stated, “We ran and found the street covered in smoke,” adding that he and the others had seen a young man and a female who had perished in the explosion.
According to Abed Mohammed al-Attar, his brother and sister-in-law were slain, leaving their kids without a parent.
“The army of Israel lies.” Gaza is not secure at all. For a lady, an old man, or a child, there is no security,” he declared.
