Mandisa, a Grammy-winning singer who became well-known during the fifth season of “American Idol,” passed away in April this year. Her age was 47. “We can verify that Mandisa was discovered dead in her residence yesterday,” her agent told NBC News in a statement. “At this moment, we are unaware of the cause of death or any other information.” The message added, “We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this extremely difficult time.” The Tennessean reported that she was discovered deceased in her Nashville residence.
Mandisa And Her Journey With ED, Depression, And More
According to her record label artist bio, Mandisa is originally from Sacramento, California. She studied vocal performance at American River College and went on to study at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Mandisa grew up singing in churches. She sang as a session and backup vocalist for musicians like Shania Twain and Trisha Yearwood after graduating from college, before competing on “American Idol.”
The singer revealed in a 2017 interview with “Good Morning America” that she nearly committed suicide in 2014 after losing her close friend Lakisha Mitchell to breast cancer.
Mandisa stated, “It got pretty bad—to the point where I would not be sitting here today if I had not gotten off that road.” “Mandisa, you can be with Jesus right now. You can listen to his voice right now. To end your life is all that is required.” It was on the verge of happening. But what I say is from God. He literally saved my life,” the woman continued. She disclosed that when she was depressed, she turned to emotional eating and seclusion.
“My whole life, I have eaten emotionally,” the woman said. “I gained all of the weight back plus an additional 75 pounds after losing almost 120 pounds, as I mentioned when I originally came here. After Kisha passed away, I fell into the worst depression of my life. She claimed that, in the end, her friends stepped in and helped her. The most recent of Mandisa’s six studio albums, “Out of the Dark,” was released in 2017.
People Mourn The Loss Of Mandisa
After word spread of Mandisa’s passing, condolences poured in.
CEO of Christian radio station K-LOVE, David Pierce said, “Her voice was massive, her smile electric, her kindness epic, but it was no match for the size of her heart.”
We were able to discuss our own issues with Mandasa since she was open enough to disclose her own struggles with us. Mandisa is now with the God she sang about, and her hardships are behind her. We are sorry, but Mandisa is at home. We invite you to join us in praying for Mandisa’s family and friends,” he continued.
The presenter of “Good Morning America,” Robin Roberts, posted on X, saying, “I’m saddened to learn about Mandisa. I feel really fortunate that she was present on my first day back at GMA after my extended medical break. Her lovely spirit and music uplifted me and many others.
The 2007 duet “Christmas Makes Me Cry” was recorded by singers Matthew West and Mandisa. West expressed his sadness at learning of Mandisa’s passing. The times we spent together hosting award presentations, touring, and, most importantly, assisting her in telling her narrative in the songwriting studio will always hold special memories for me.
