Her six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn served as the inspiration for songs such as Delicate, Lover, Invisible String, and Lavender Haze. However, it was revealed that they had broken up in April 2023, a month after Swift began her record-breaking Eras tour.

People magazine was informed by an unnamed source that it was “not dramatic” and “amicable.” However, fans assumed the singer would address the fallout when she revealed her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department, at the Grammy Awards in February. They quickly pointed out that the title resembled The Tortured Man Club, a group chat that Alwyn and fellow actor Paul Mescal had exchanged.
Then, during a Melbourne concert, Taylor Swift revealed to the crowd that the album was her most therapeutic work yet.
“It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life,” she stated. “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets.” It feels very much like a cleanse.

Taylor Swift stated on Instagram at the release of Part One, “Everything is fair in love and poetry… THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, the new album. Available right now 🤍”
Then, the shocking revelation was made via an Instagram post that said, “The Tortured Poets Department is a hidden DOUBLE album. ✌️ It’s a 2 am surprise. This is the second episode of TTPD because I wanted to share all the painful poetry I’d produced over the past two years with you. The collection has fifteen more tracks. And now the tale is no longer mine. You own it all. 🤍.”
Songs More About Heartbreak Than Love?
Swift defined the record as “new works that reflect events, opinions, and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.”
Furthermore, time has been “closed and boarded up,” according to her. After wounds heal, there’s nothing to settle scores on, nothing to avenge. And after more thought, it became clear that many of them were self-inflicted.”
Reporter Denny Directo of “Entertainment Tonight” referred to the record as some of her most vulnerable work.
“Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean,” Directo stated to CBS News. “… This seems to have more songs about heartbreak than it does about love.”
