Microsoft issued a warning on Friday, stating that China is likely to utilize content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) to target elections in South Korea, the US, and India and to identify the problems that divide voters in these countries prior to national elections.
Elections In India Were To Be Targeted?
Microsoft explained how China “is using fake social media accounts to poll voters on what divides them most to sow division and possibly influence the outcome of the US presidential election in its favor” in a blog post that referenced its study on “Threat Intelligence Insights.”
The Microsoft Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) released its most recent East Asia report with Microsoft Threat Intelligence insights on Friday.
Predicted to target elections in “India, South Korea, and the United States” are “Chinese cyber and influence actors, and to some extent North Korean cyber actors,” according to the research.
The Role Of Generative AI In China
China has reportedly started employing generative AI to produce slick and captivating visual content. This influence operation, or IO, looks for viewpoints on US political issues. The US was the target of AI-generated memes that Microsoft Threat Intelligence said it was still identifying.
According to the Microsoft analysis, China has been using more AI-generated material to achieve its global objectives. A variety of issues are the focus of the “increased use” of Chinese AI-generated content in recent months, which tries to “influence and sow division” in the US and internationally. This topic covered a lot of contentious domestic topics.
These subjects include drug use in the United States, immigration laws, racial tensions in the nation, the railroad derailment in Kentucky in November 2023, the wildfires in Maui in August 2023, the disposal of Japanese nuclear effluent, and more.
The Microsoft investigation also cited the company’s September 2023 report, which described how social media accounts connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started off pretending to be Americans across political spectrums and replied to remarks made by real users.
North Korea Steps Up Supply Chain Attacks
According to the research, North Korea has stepped up its supply chain attacks and cryptocurrency heists in order to finance and advance its military objectives and gather intelligence.
“It has also begun to use AI to make its operations more effective and efficient,” it stated. This could make it easier to create new military capabilities.
Furthermore, it mentioned how North Korean threat actors are adjusting to the AI era. “They are learning to use tools powered by AI large-language models (LLM) to make their operations more efficient and effective,” according to the research.
