The Christian community observes Good Friday as a holy feast every year to remember Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and death. It is also known as Great Friday, Black Friday, Holy Friday, or Great Friday. It comes after Maundy Thursday and before Holy Saturday. Further, it is followed by Easter Sunday, which commemorates the resurrection of Christ. This day is observed every year between March 20 and April 23. This year, it falls on March 29 (Friday).
Good Friday: The History
The New Testament states that Good Friday commemorates the Roman crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ claims to be the Son of God led to his condemnation for blasphemy by Jewish religious authorities. They then took him to the Romans. There a Roman official named Pontius Pilate condemned him to the worst kind of punishment available at the time—crucifixion.
According to the biblical narratives, Jesus was publicly beaten and made to carry a large wooden cross through the streets while a multitude of mockers followed him. When all was said and done, he was crucified by his feet and wrists and died there. According to a Hindustan Times report, his crucifixion is remembered as a sacrifice made to atone for humankind’s sins and make peace between his followers and God, his Father.
Highlighting The Significance
Good Friday is a day of serious contemplation and prayer for Christians because they see it as a representation of Jesus’ final offering in order to atone for humanity’s sins.
A major component of the Paschal Triduum, Good Friday is commemorated as a day of mourning, penance, and fasting during Holy Week. The three-day period starts on Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus Christ’s Last Supper. Furthermore, it ends with the Easter Vigil, which is the culmination of the event, and ends with evening prayer on Easter Sunday. According to HT, Christians observe Good Friday by fasting, giving charity to the poor, and attending church.
They look to prayer for relief from the anguish, grief, and suffering in their lives. Furthermore, the Great Three Hours’ Agony Service is held from noon to three o’clock in the afternoon. It is in accordance with biblical accounts of the gloom that shrouded the region during Jesus’ crucifixion.
