Five individuals who had taken “mouth freshener” after dinner at a cafe in Gurugram on March 2 reported experiencing burning in their mouths and started vomiting blood. It was discovered later that the purported “mouth freshener” was actually dry ice. A few days after the event, the waitress who brought the dry ice and the restaurant manager were taken into custody.

What Is Dry Ice?
At very low temperatures, approximately -78.5 degrees Celsius (-109.3 degrees Fahrenheit), dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. “It is commonly used for freezing and cooling due to its sublimation property, which enables it to transition straight from a solid to a gas without going through a liquid phase unlike regular ice,” stated Dr. Rajeev Gupta, director of internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi.
