14 additional Zika cases, including one in which a pregnant woman 24 years old was found to be infected, were reported to the Kerala health department, prompting a warning.
After the health authorities in the area confirmed 14 cases of the Zika virus, the Kerala government issued a state of alert throughout all of the district.
A 24-year-old pregnant lady was among those sick; on Thursday, the illness spread by mosquitoes was identified in her. Per reports, the Zika virus can cause some birth defects during pregnancy and can spread from a pregnant mother to her fetus.
Gujarat, a state in western India, reported experiencing a Zika outbreak from 2016 to 2017. It is connected to cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological condition in which the body attacks nerve cells, resulting in weakening and occasionally paralysis in the muscles.
What Is The Virus Known As Zika?
The Zika virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, was discovered in 1947 in Rhesus macaque monkeys in Uganda. Later, in the 1950s, it spread to other African nations and afflicted people.
Human infections were found sporadically throughout Asia and Africa during the 1960s and 1980s. There have been reports of a Zika virus outbreak in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific.
From February to November of 2016, the Zika virus, various neurological diseases, and microcephaly constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Congenital abnormalities and the Zika virus were soon found to be causally linked.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were introduced to other locations by the Zika virus epidemics that were discovered throughout the United States. Sexual transmission has been verified as an additional route of Zika virus infection. The illnesses were found in travelers from the areas of active transmission.
Symptoms Of The Zika Virus
Numerous infected individuals do not exhibit any Zika virus symptoms. The majority of those who exhibit illness do so after 3 to 14 days; symptoms are usually minor and include fever, conjunctivitis, rash, headaches, muscle and joint pain, and malaise. The infection typically lasts for 2 to 7 days. Since the symptoms of the Zika virus are similar to those of other viral and non-viral illnesses, laboratory confirmation is necessary for the diagnosis of the virus.
Treatment For The Zika Virus
The Zika virus is a benign sickness that doesn’t require special care. When diagnosed with the Zika virus, patients should relax, stay hydrated, and take paracetamol for fever and pain. Since there is no vaccine for it, it is best to seek medical attention if the symptoms worsen.
